Protect a Ghost

The Brief

Last Halloween we made something a bit different for Greenpeace International involving a projector and two cargo bikes. This stunt was part of a bigger campaign to stop deep sea mining before it starts.

The Protect the Oceans team came to us with the idea of projecting an animated ocean creature onto landmarks. The video was due to launch on Halloween, so the ghost octopus seemed like a perfect character and officially the cutest.

How We Did It

At pace we pitched a creative strategy; a distressed ghost octopus character who anxiously travels around the city at speed wondering why he’s there and not in the ocean. We planned a sequence of character loops and made an animatic using some rough animation and stock images. This helped the film crew visualise where the projections could work around Oslo. We refined the animation, responding to feedback from the film crew to ensure the octopus was visible in the projection. The sequences were exported on an alpha channel and handed over to the film crew in Norway. Working around some Oslovian weather, the octopus was projected and filmed from cargo bikes in and around the city.

The footage was sent to us back in Bristol, we cut together the shots into a narrative film before handing over to the Greenpeace social team. A pretty pacey and high energy project which was loads of fun!

How Did We Do

A really fun and quick project with Rumpus! In under two weeks they had refined the creative, mapped out a story along with producing some very cool ghost octopus animations. Always bringing constructive ideas to our meetings, Rumpus helped us get this project from an idea to reality, and all in time for Halloween!
