The Brief
We were over the moon to work with Greenpeace again, twelve months on from our first project together, Sanctuary. This time the Protect the Oceans team needed content to expose horrendous industrial fishing processes for their social media platforms.
We produced a character based narrative film to show the horrors of longline fishing. It needed to include new live action segments of longlining filmed around the Emperor Seamounts, with the purpose of driving petition signatures.
How We Did It
The film stars Wisdom the albatross, the oldest wild bird known to humans! She is 72 years old and was still incubating eggs up until 2020! Hinano Teavai-Murphy is a widely recognised expert in Tahitian cultural history, she grew up on Moorea and Tahiti and generously provided us with the most incredible voice for Wisdom, along with Tahitian Heirava Flohr as the cute chick.
We worked with Warwick Johnson-Cadwell in 2015 on an animated section of Moby Dick, we’ve been eagerly awaiting another collaboration! His beautifully loose and characterful sketches, natural persuasion for nautical drawings and passion for the sea; a perfect fit for this project. Here’s some outright charming character development sketches for Wisdom, her little fluffy chick and trawlers. Sketchbook gold!
The schedule for this campaign was fairly tight, we wanted Warwick’s illustrations to sing and make the deadlines. We kept the character work for Wisdom and the Chick fully hand drawn in ToonBoom, and the Uncle Feathers story in a cutout motion comic style. The two processes marry up really well visually.
How Did We Do
It’s always an absolute pleasure working with the Rumpus team. They recently assisted us with two short animations that, as usual, had to be done by yesterday. After providing them with a brief, the team came back with a phenomenal draft and they were able to deliver the final animations shortly after. The Rumpus team’s creativity knows no bounds; they’re accommodating and professional and their stellar animations never disappoint.
